WEATHERIZATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
This program includes the following two courses:
1) Fundamentals of Building Science
CSA 575: Monday: 6:00P.M.-9:00P.M.; 12 weeks; Cost: $200
This course introduces students to the basic principles of hot and cool air transfer and air movement within a residential area. Students learn how weatherization works as they become acquainted with the major role that insulation plays in the home heating and cooling processes. In this course, they will become familiar with the language and vocabulary of the trade while performing basic energy loss / energy diagnosis analysis in an effort to instill in these future weatherization professionals a sense of responsibility to public safety and health as related to the energy conservation movement.
2) Weatherization-(Hands-on) Training
CSA 561: Wednesday: 6:00P.M. 9:00P.M.; 12 weeks; Cost: $350
This training provides students with the theoretical and hands-on skills necessary to work as home energy conservation professionals, using some of the most eco friendly products available. Students are introduced to different aspects of energy conservation and the management of energy costs through energy diagnosis using blower door and infrared camera. Topics and training include: insulation types and the R Value, areas of heat loss in a typical energy inefficient home, the use of mock structures to mimic different areas of a building, including the insulation of existing walls, floors, the basement, and the attic for energy efficiency and for energy costs reduction.
AIR SEALING TRAINING
Weatherization—Air Sealing Training for homeowners
CSA 576: Z1: Thursday: 6:00P.M.- 9:00P.M. 8 weeks; Cost: $250
This short-term hands-on training is specifically designed for those who would like to begin a career in energy efficiency as home air sealing specialists and for community homeowners who need to acquire the basic skills to begin weatherizing their homes in order to make them more energy efficient. Students are introduced to the basic principles of building science and to different weatherization materials while learning the basic weatherproofing and air sealing techniques from the basement to the attic. Enrollment is limited.
Building Diagnosis—Infrared & Thermal Imaging Training
CSA 830, Saturday: 9:00A.M.-1:00P.M.; 2 weekend session;$300
This training offers a unique opportunity to construction workers and energy conservation professionals to acquire the skills necessary for basic infrared camera operation and for thermal imaging interpretation. Students learn important skills and techniques about building thermographic inspection for energy efficiency. This course is offered every semester and in the summer.
Building Diagnosis—Blower Door Training
CSA 831, Saturday: 9:00A.M.-1:00P.M.; 2 Weekend Session; $300
The blower door is one of the tools widely used in building diagnosis for energy efficiency. This training offers an opportunity to construction workers and energy conservation professionals to become familiar with the use of different parts of a blower door. Furthermore, they learn how to interpret different levels of air pressure and gauge reading during a blower door diagnosis. Basic energy efficiency field data collection and reporting will also be introduced.
