STEM LEAPs Grant Projects at RCC

RCC participates in three of the STEM initiatives that are led by the Leadership
Excellence Acceleration Projects (LEAPs) at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

These initiatives are:

UMLSAMP

The Urban Massachusetts Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (UMLSAMP) program is partly funded by the National Science Foundation. Main objectives of the program are to increase post-secondary degree attainment in the STEM fields among underrepresented minority groups and to enhance the competitiveness of members of these groups in the areas of employment and participation in the increasingly science- and technology-based economy. The program seeks to achieve these objectives through on- and off-campus activities, support from local industry, and collaborative events among participating local community colleges and universities.

  • Recruitment
  • Facilitated Study Groups (FSG’s)
  • Development of technical skills through internships in research laboratories and on technological projects.

LSAMP Internships

Research internship opportunity
During the Spring and Fall semesters, STEM students at RCC may become involved in paid research internships through The Urban Massachusetts Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (UMLSAMP). Each assignment will be at a company, organization or school that has been approved by RCC faculty.

LSAMP Scholars

Spring and Fall semesters Selected students receive $800 stipends for working with RCC faculty members on STEM-related assignments. Summer semester Students enrolled in selected STEM courses during the Summer semester and who participate in the FSG for the course receive $800 stipends for tuition reimbursement.

Bridges to the Baccalaureate (Bridges)

The Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Its goal is to advance the careers of underrepresented minority students who are interested in careers in biomedical research. In this program, community college students are paired with mentors in a four year college or institution. The students are encouraged to complete an Associates degree program in a STEM field at the community college, then transfer to a baccalaureate degree program in the sciences at a four-year educational institution. Roxbury Community College partners with the University of Massachusetts Boston in this endeavor.

Students in the program receive summer internship assignments where they are trained in laboratory techniques and obtain valuable experience working on research projects alongside experts in biomedical research.

In addition to Summer internships, students benefit from participation in Facilitated Study Groups (FSG’s) where they are tutored in STEM courses. Also, selected Bridge participants attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS). See here for past RCC student posters at this event.

Eligibility Requirements For Bridges Interns

  • U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Member of an underrepresented minority group
  • Currently enrolled at RCC
  • Major in a STEM field
  • Must be entering the Freshman year of college or have completed one semester of college with Chemistry and Math credits.
