HYPERION IS COMING! STAY TUNED

For over a decade, the minutes of the RCC Trustees Meetings have
been available in the library for those who take the time to come and read
them. Starting in June, Trustees
Meetings minutes will be “published” online in the library’s web page along
with the backlog of minutes from previous meetings. Keeping up to date with decisions at Trustees Meetings will
become very easy for those who are interested.
Bringing the minutes of the Trustees Meetings online is the pilot
project using the Hyperion Digital Media Archive system. A digital media archive is a system for
managing, preserving and providing online access to a wide variety of digital
collections such as printed documents, picture collections or sound and video
files. The first step is to
digitize. Paper copies of old Trustees
Meetings minutes will be scanned into computer files, which can then be entered
into the Hyperion database for online access.
At RCC, the digital collections will be available through the online
library catalog and therefore accessible from anywhere. Other projects in the planning stages using
the Hyperion system include:
·
Putting
articles online, which are on library reserve and needed for RCC courses. When loaded, these articles will be
available to students online.
·
Creating
online access to a collection of pictures illustrating the history of the
college. Hopefully, processing of these
can begin in the fall and be one of the events marking the 30th
anniversary of the college this year.
Once the first project goes live, there will undoubtedly be
significant interest in adding many different kinds of collections to the
digital format. Video files of
graduation exercises and lecture series could be included. These memorable events could easily be
recaptured and in the latter case help retain the loyalty of graduates once
they have left. There are also several
archival collections donated to or promised to the college, which illustrate
different aspects of the African American community in Boston over the past 40
years. These should prove interesting
to historians and students alike, especially when available through any
Internet outlet.
The Hyperion Digital Media Archive system is an extremely innovative
and fairly rare technology for any college library. RCC will literally have one of the only libraries in New England
with this kind of program. We will keep
you updated on the development of this interesting project.

JAMES
REED, ARTIST AND ASSISTANT COLLEGE DEAN, LEAVES
BOOKS TO RCC LIBRARY
The RCC library has received a fine collection of books
from the estate of James R. Reed, late of the South End. Mr. Reed was a cofounder of the African
American Master Artists in Residence Program at Northeastern University and
Assistant Dean of Northeastern’s College of Criminal Justice. The collection includes many excellent art
books as well as those dealing with criminal justice and African American
topics. According to Pamela King who oversaw the dispersal of the
books, Mr. Reed wanted to give his books to RCC because he saw a need here and
he thought RCC students would be interested in the subjects covered. Ms. King’s father, former state
representative Mel King, was a long time
friend of Mr. Reed and executor of his estate.

For February, the library created a Timeline of
African American History. One or two
students and sometimes whole classes often seemed to be browsing it, taking
notes and learning snippets of the history of Black people in this
country. The ESOL faculty used the
Timeline in a little different way, however, according to Sterling
Giles,
head of the department. It was Bette
Steinmuller’s idea, used by her collegues, to employ the Timeline as a
tool in teaching the differences among English tenses. ESOL teachers brought their classes to the
hall outside the library to demonstrate past, present, future, past perfect,
present perfect and future perfect.
According to Manju Hertzig, the very act of walking back and forth in the
hall, corresponding to past and future on the Timeline, helped students get an
understanding that was not just intellectual but built right into their own
bodies’ movements. Very clever idea! Glad the library could be of service.

BOOK SALE RESULTS
A
big vote of thanks to all those who donated to the recent library Valentine’s
Book Sale & Flea Market and also to all those who exchanged their money for
our bargains. Sales were brisk
for many hours on February 13th and 14th. The biggest spender was a nursing student
who filled 4 boxes with books and other items and then shanghaied her friends
to help drag them out to the car. The
sale was a big success and a lot of fun.
Its purpose was to raise money to buy video players and monitors to lend
out for classroom use. A shortage
caused by broken equipment meant that increasingly teachers could not depend
on
getting equipment from the library when they needed it. New video players and monitors have now
already been purchased and are in use.
Any teacher who is unable to reserve such equipment in the future should
contact library director Roblyn Honeysucker at x5357 or rschwehm@rcc.mass.edu.

BOOKS IN PRINT WITH BOOK REVIEWS
Read
any good book reviews lately? Books
In Print with Book Reviews includes bibliographic information on about 2½
million books that are in print and also those which are forthcoming or
declared out-of-print or out-of-stock indefinitely. It is an indispensable reference tool for librarians and
booksellers. However, it also has
500,000 book reviews, which are of interest to any book lover. Before you invest 5 or more hours on your
next book, you may want to check what’s being said about it by those who
analyze books for a living in such publications as Library Journal,
Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and BookList. The Books in Print With Book Reviews database gives
you those reviews all in one place.
Just go to the RCC library’s web site http://www.rcc.mass.edu/lib, select Electronic Resources and
choose Books in Print in the Language, Literature & Publishing
section. From your home computer, you
will need to enter a library bar code, which you can pick up at the library
circulation desk. Here, for example, is
the November 15 Publisher’s Weekly review of The
Arraignment by Steve Martini, one of the books on the RCC
library Popular and Best Sellers list for this month.
In Martini's best Paul Madriani novel to
date, the aging, intellectual attorney finds himself defending the accused
killer of his friend and colleague, the outrageous Nick Rush, who was gunned
down while speaking to a scumbag client Paul had refused to represent. As guilt
eats away at him (if he had agreed to take the case, it would have been him on
the slab because the client was the target), Paul takes on the case so that he
can find out for himself what the connection was between Nick and a strange lot
of characters who seem to have had secret past dealings with him. Expecting to
find a drug or weapons ring at the root of the mystery, Paul instead finds that
an ancient Mayan artifact is the source of everyone's greed. While Martini's
strength has always been his courtroom scenes, he shows his versatility here by
making various paper-pushing legal matters--such as insurance policies and
property settlements--seem intriguing and even exciting. Plus, in uncovering
this sordid tale, which takes Paul from his home in San Diego to Mexico and
Guatemala, Martini further develops Paul into a thoughtful, full-bodied
character. A top-notch entry in a popular series. --Mary Frances Wilkens
