After a year of looking for a
library consortium, the RCC library has joined the Metro Boston Library Network
(MBLN). The connection became official
with the signing of the MBLN contract in February. The next two months will involve many details before the new
system goes live in May. Expanded
library service will be available during summer classes.
MBLN is a
compact of 7 libraries and library systems in Boston, Malden and Chelsea. There are 70 library sites in all. The members are:
For RCC,
the advantages are significant.
The
library expects the amount of interlibrary borrowing to increase significantly
as users take advantage of the system.
There will
also be many behind the scenes advantages:
Senior BPL
and MBLN staff members say that they are “thrilled” to have RCC library join
the Network. This is because of
advantages to the BPL. These include:

NEW
GROUP STUDY ROOM
In the 1990s, 2 large sections of the library were sliced off for use by the bookstore and the Honor Society. Now that both have relocated, these spaces have reverted to the library expanding the 1st floor by almost 50%. The former Honor Society space has become part of the no-talking individual study area. The old bookstore space, however, is being used for something completely new—group study. Many students have requested a space in the library where they can discuss course materials with classmates. A growing number of courses encourage this approach. The library has lacked a space for these students until now. Most new libraries have small group study rooms. It is hoped that the large group study room can be subdivided into small spaces so that the study groups do not bother each other. In the meantime, to ensure that this space is used for group study, students will sign up to use one of the 7 tables in the room and leave an ID at the circulation desk. The expansion of the first floor of the library also means more seats for students. In fact, the library now meets the seating guidelines from the American Library Association for the first time in over ten years.
Thanks for this important development should go to:
· The RCC faculty, which voted unanimously to recommend to the president the restoration to the library of these areas.
· The 2004 members of the Learning Resources Committee (Allison Bernard, Mark Lawrence, Veronica McCormack, Patrick Seyon, Nancy Teel & David Updike), who lobbied for this result.
· Facilities Department staff, which rearranged and moved literally thousands of pounds of furniture.
· Vice President Brenda Mercomes, a strong library supporter.
· President Terrence Gomes, who made sure it happened.

NATIONAL
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH DISPLAY
“Women Change America” is the theme of the
2005 Women’s History Month. The library
is offering a display of works by and about some of the 140 women honored this
year by the National Women’s History Project.
They include women of different races and walks of life including writers,
scientists, educators, politicians, artists, historians and informed
citizens. A notebook with brief
biographies of those honored, including Sojouner Truth, pictured here, is part
of the display. For more information
about the National Women’s History Project, see www.nwhp.org.

The RCC
library has just received a large collection of new ebooks. Ebooks are not new to RCC library but this
collection should be much more useful.
Here’s why:
It is true
that ebooks are more difficult to read than regular books. Nobody takes an ebook mystery to bed. It can also sometimes take several seconds
to move from page to page. However,
ebooks can be extremely useful if used as reference sources.
Generally,
ebooks are no less expensive than regular books. This group, however, was bought in conjunction NELINET, the New
England Library Network and with hundreds of academic libraries throughout the
Northeast. The average cost per
book: an amazing TWO DOLLARS per
title!! NELINET plan future joint
buying of academic ebooks that RCC will be able to take advantage of.
Listed below
are the new ebooks arranged by subject.
Take some time to browse through this interesting list. To read one:
Adobe® Reader® 6.0 and Internet Explorer 6.0 are required to use ebooks. Updates can be downloaded for free. NetLibrary provides Ebooks at RCC in conjunction with NELINET.
Send your comments, especially difficulties, in using the
new cataloged academic ebooks to Mark Lawrence at mlawrence@rcc.mass.edu.
