Fernandel Salomon, Class of 2013, Business Major
Employment at Harvard University was an opportunity that Fernandel Salomon could not pass up. He had made several unsuccessful attempts at finding employment at the prestigious university. When Irina Galatskaya, Director of Career Development and Internships at Roxbury Community College, presented Fernandel with an internship opportunity at Harvard, he knew it was a way for him to get through the door.
The benefits of the Harvard internship surpassed Fernandel’s initial need for employment. He gained important workforce experience and knowledge, as well as self-confidence. Fernandel also discovered the need to further explore his chosen career path.
After completing his internship, Fernandel received an offer for a full-time position at the Harvard Credit Union. This position allows Fernandel to use his Roxbury Community College business training as well as provide him with more access and benefits within the Harvard University system. Currently, Fernandel is taking classes at Harvard Extension School. Fernandel observed that “My classes at Harvard Extension School are rigorous, but nonetheless I am doing well.” Recently Fernandel received an award from Harvard School of Public Health for free tuition in its highly competitive Research Training Program.
Fernandel concluded: "I have had an unfathomable opportunity provided by Irina Galatskaya, Director of Career Development and Internships (at RCC). She has been supportive, informative, and motivating, and she has been the mentor that I could have never afforded. I urge anyone who is considering an internship in the future to ‘just run with it’. Make a positive impression. Make the best of your internship opportunity.”
