Dr. Charles Desmond Delivers Inspirational Remarks
at RCC’s All-College Meeting

Dr. Charles Desmond, Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, declared that Roxbury Community College is vital to the Commonwealth’s community college system and to the Roxbury community as a whole at RCC’s All-College Meeting held September 4th. In a clear show of support, Dr. Desmond said that he was at the meeting to help celebrate the start of a new school year under the outstanding leadership of Interim President, Dr. Linda Edmonds Turner. He also made it clear the Roxbury Community College has the solid support of the Board of Higher Education.
Directly addressing one major concern of the College community, Mr. Desmond drew loud applause from the audience when he emphasized that there are no plans to merge Roxbury Community College with any other community college.
He praised the faculty, administration, and staff of Roxbury Community College, saying that every member of the RCC community has a hand in student success and the success of the College as a whole.
Dr. Desmond concluded his remarks with a short discussion of the Massachusetts Department of Education’s Vision Project Report, which is scheduled for release on September 20th. Roxbury Community College will be prominently featured in the Report for many reasons. For example, RCC has significantly increased the rate of students moving out of developmental math classes and into credit-bearing coursework.
The Vision Project Report will:
- Document public higher education’s increasingly critical role in driving and supporting Massachusetts’ innovative economy;
- Provide the first-ever comprehensive assessment of Massachusetts public higher education in comparison with other state systems;
- Outline a strategic plan to achieve national leadership in public higher education.
Following his remarks, Dr. Desmond toured Roxbury Community College’s state-of-the-art biotechnology labs.
