Men’s Basketball

The Tigers Men’s Basketball program has a rich history of winning not only on the state and regional levels, but we have the honor of being the 2000 NJCAA National Champions. RCC Men’s Basketball has produced a significant amount of Regional team members, Regional All-Stars, NJCAA All-Tournament team members, NJCAA All-Americans and Coaches of the Year. In recent history, the Tigers have made national tournament appearances in 2010 (5th place) and 2012 (7th place).

Albert Hayle Bio

“I am truly humbled and honored to be the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Roxbury Community” said Hayle.  “This is a life changing opportunity for me... it’s a dream come true to be a head coach on the college level at an institution that’s a staple in the community.  Thank you to President Roberson, Vice President Regner, Dean Oroz and Director of Athletics Jelani Townsell for this tremendous opportunity.”

Albert Hayle has over 9 years of college coaching experience (Assistant Coach at Emmanuel College, Umass Boston, and Newbury College) and high school coaching experience (Head Boys Basketball Coach at Dracut Senior High School).  Albert is also a renowned basketball skill development expert throughout the greater Boston area and established a basketball skill development program called Rise Athletics, LLC.  He also has a passion for working with youth in Boston and has over 10 years of experience working within the non-profit sector with a focus on educational advancement, community outreach, youth development, and leadership.  Albert recently established his own nonprofit iriseaboveit, inc. with the goal of providing educational services to young people by uplifting them with resources and tools that will help them develop necessary life skills and knowledge to make healthier life decisions.

Albert Hayle had an outstanding playing career at Emmanuel College where he was a 1,000 point scorer, 4 year captain, and 4 year MVP.  In 2014, Coach Hayle was the first male athlete to be inducted into the Emmanuel College Athletics Hall of Fame.

“I’m extremely excited to have Albert Hayle as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Roxbury Community College” said Townsell.  “Albert will be a great role model and leader for our student-athletes.  He was a stellar athlete at Emmanuel College which is why he was inducted into their Hall of Fame.  He also has an outstanding coaching background.  Most importantly, his passion to connect and work with youth in the local Boston area speaks volumes about his character.” 

Albert earned his Bachelor's Degree in Child Development from Emmanuel College and his Master’s Degree (MSW) in Social Work at Wheelock College.

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Tigers Women’s Basketball team has a rich history of winning on the State and Regional levels. Devin Hill Bio

“I am extremely excited and proud to be the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Roxbury Community College” said Hill.  “It is an honor to lead a program with so much tradition and respect in the Boston community.  I want to thank the entire Roxbury Athletic Department and the Roxbury Administration for believing in me.  I look forward to working with future RCC student athletes to help them reach their potential on and off the court.”

Devin has coached at various levels from college to high school and AAU.  Most recently, Devin was the Head Regional Boys Coach and Guidance Counselor at DME Sports Academy in Daytona Beach, FL.  He also was an assistant coach over the past four years for one of the top AAU programs in the Nation, the New York Gauchos Girls AAU program.  In 2015 – 2017, Devin was the first assistant women’s basketball coach at Queens College.  During his time at Queens College, Devin assisted with recruiting, skill development, and film exchange.

Devin had an outstanding high school and college playing career.  In high school Devin was honorable mention All-American by The Sporting News... ranked as the 67th-best power forward in the nation by ESPN.com... named the Most Valuable Player of the New England Class D Championship game... a nominee for the McDonald's All-American game... played for the New York Gauchos AAU program.  Devin attended DePaul University in Chicago, IL and was a member of the men’s basketball team from 2008 – 2011.  Devin is ranked 17th All-time in career blocked shots at DePaul and 7th All-time in blocked shots in a game with 6 versus Southern University on December 19th 2008.

Devin earned his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Arizona State University and his Master’s Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia University Irvine.

Aweys Abdi Bio

“I am both honored and grateful to accept the position of Head Men's Soccer Coach at Roxbury Community College” said Abdi. “I am proud to join an institution that takes pride in having diverse staff and student populations.  For almost a decade now I have dedicated my life to making a difference in the lives of young minority men. I want these young men to have positive role models and to prevent them from heading in the wrong direction.  As a coach I am passionate about the game of soccer and I strive to transform and make a difference in my players' s lives beyond the field.  To be Head Coach at RCC is truly an amazing opportunity.  I would like to extend gratitude to President Roberson, Vice President Regner, Dean Oroz and Director of Athletics Jelani Townsell for giving me the chance to be part of an amazing team.”

Aweys was a two time State Champion in Maine and also a two time Ohio International Spring Cup Champion.  Aweys is the Founder and Head Coach of the Portland Brother Soccer Club located in Portland, ME.  He’s also a board member of the Massachusetts Somali Coaches Association. 

“I’m happy to announce Aweys Abdi as Head Men’s Soccer coach at Roxbury Community College” said Townsell.  “Aweys is very passionate about connecting with the Roxbury community and also developing and reshaping our Men’s Soccer program.  We are very excited to have him and we look forward to a great season.”

Aweys received his Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Southern Maine.

 

Track & Field

RCC Track & Field has been extremely successful. As one of only a few community colleges in the region with a track team, RCC has been consistently producing NJCAA All-Americans (6 total). We have also had 3 NJCAA National Champions in their events, including an NJCAA record-holder in the 200m dash. The team has also had an NJCAA Academic All-American.
