Today, Sheriff of Suffolk County Steven W. Tompkins was re-appointed to the Roxbury Community College (RCC) Board of Trustees and appointed Chair of the Board by Governor Charlie Baker. Chairman Tompkins was sworn-in by Governor Baker this morning at the Massachusetts State House.
Chairman Tompkins was initially appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2013 by Governor Deval Patrick. Throughout this tenure on the Board, Chairman Tompkins has been extremely active in supporting the College’s role in the community, and supporting the mission and vision of the College. Chairman Tompkins has become a fixture at RCC events, and frequently highlights the progress of the College at his Directions for Corrections community forums.
“Sheriff Steve Tompkins is the very best choice for the next Chairman of the Board of Trustees,” says Dr. Valerie Roberson, President of Roxbury Community College. “Chairman Tompkins’ enduring commitment to the students and his longstanding ties to the Greater Roxbury Community will help propel Roxbury Community College to the next level in preparing Boston residents for economic success.”
Before being appointed Sheriff of Suffolk County in 2013, Sheriff Tompkins served as Chief of External Affairs for the Department. Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Tompkins served as the Director of Marketing and Public Affairs for the Dimock Community Health Center and served for ten years at AT&T Cable. He has also served as Board Chair of the Sportsman’s Tennis Club and a member of the board for City Year Boston.
“It is a great honor to receive this appointment to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Roxbury Community College,” says Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins. “I have long held RCC as one of the true jewels within the Massachusetts educational system, and I look forward to expanding upon my previous service as Vice Chair as we continue to elevate this institution and ensure that it shines ever-brighter.”
RCC students will conduct a swearing-in ceremony for Chairman Tompkins on September 10, 2019, at 2:00 pm, in the Student Commons (Building 3). Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to attend to celebrate Chairman Tompkins’ appointment, and to thank outgoing Chairman Gerald Chertavian, President and CEO of Year Up, for his years of dedication and support.
