The Roxbury Community College Foundation (RCCF) is celebrating the legacy of the legendary Haynes Family by hosting a celebration in their honor on November 9, 2019. Money raised from the event will be used to establish Haynes Family Scholarships for RCC Students.

Haynes Family Biography
The four sons of the Haynes family—Douglas, Vincent, Roy, and Michael—have edified and enriched the Roxbury community for nearly a century. The Haynes legacy in Boston began when their parents, Gustavus and Edna Haynes, arrived on Ellis Islands from Barbados in 1920.
Douglas
The eldest son, Douglas Haynes, developed a keen interest in music and excelled at playing a variety of instruments. He honorably served his country for three years during WWII. After the war, he focused on his love of trumpet and enrolled at the New England Conservatory. Douglas toured with Blanche Calloway, who was widely believed to have been the first African American female bandleader of an all-male big band, in the 1920s and 1930s.
Vincent
Sharing his brothers’ love of music, the late Cameron Vincent Haynes was a jazz historian and co-founder of the Boston Jazz Society. Vincent helped produce an annual summer concert, highlighting jazz greats and providing scholarships to future jazz students at Berkeley College of Music. As a community activist, Vinny cemented his own legacy in our beloved neighborhood of Roxbury when, in 1966, he co-founded the Lower Roxbury Community Corporation. Later renamed the Madison Park Development Corporation, this community agency worked to improve the lives of its members with educational opportunities and resources. Along with these accomplishments, he was also a city planner, well-known photographer, and music journalist.
Michael
The youngest of the brothers, Reverend Dr. Michael E. Haynes earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theology in 1949 from the New England School of Theology in Brookline, MA and continued his education at Shelton College in New York City, earning a graduate degree in Mission and Clinical Services in 1950. In 1964, Rev. Haynes became the Senior Minister of the Historic Twelfth Baptist Church and led the congregation until retirement in 2004. Rev. Dr. Haynes served his community as a Massachusetts State Representative and later as a member of the State Parole Board. Rev. Dr. Haynes’ commitment to the youth in his community is an integral part of his lasting legacy.
Roy
Roy Haynes began his full-time professional music career in 1945 after Douglas exposed Roy to the world of jazz. In the late 40s, Roy played with saxophonist Lester Young and later became a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker's quintet. Today he is one of the few musicians still performing whose origins touch the very roots of jazz. Roy Haynes is an extraordinary jazz drummer who has shared stages with artists from Charlie Parker and John Coltrane to Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny.
