Statement on Current Events

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Community Members,

Over the past week, we’ve watched the murder of George Floyd compel hundreds of thousands of Americans to protest police brutality and to demand equal justice under the law. These events have confirmed what we already know: Black people in America have been systematically oppressed for hundreds of years. While some progress has been made, no progress has been made.

So many of you experience the impact of racism on a daily basis. Know that the people of color in leadership positions at RCC share your experiences. Our degrees and titles do not protect us from discrimination. When we take off our suits at the end of our shifts, we have the same experiences due to the color of our skin as you do.

And any of us who choose to serve at RCC as administrators, faculty and staff, see and experience the systematic prejudice and institutional racism against our school and against our students.

Yet, even in these darkest of times, please remember this: everyone in the RCC community believes that Black Lives Matter. We work at RCC because we care about you, and we want to have a positive impact on your lives. Our goal is to have your time at RCC serve as a reminder that there are spaces in this world where you can always feel supported and a part of a people who want to make a difference.

While we can’t cure all societal ills with our efforts, we know that we have an important role to play in the continued dialogue. We are currently planning listening sessions for staff and listening sessions for students. The College will continue to participate in social justice projects. Further details will be shared over the coming days, weeks, and years. Make no mistake, our commitment to combating racism is a core part of our mission, and we are in this for the long haul.

Roxbury Community College is committed to building a future society that values and respects all people. We stand with those who continue the struggle for justice and encourage all students and community members to stay strong and safe as we move forward.

Take care of yourselves and each other. And please reach out to any of us if you need support.

Sincerely,
Senior Leadership at RCC
