RCC and CVS Health Address Increased Demand for Pharmacy Technicians

CVS Training Pharmacy

The challenge of distributing millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccines has revealed a greater need for pharmacy technicians. Roxbury Community College (RCC) is working with CVS Health to respond to the demand for qualified workers that reflect their community.

RCC and CVS Health have an established partnership on a five-month Pharmacy Technology workforce development training program that has the approval of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy. “RCC is honored to provide our students with a quality pharmacy technology training program at an affordable price that moves them on the path to career success.” says RCC President Dr. Valerie Roberson. The program costs $2,000, with need-based $500 scholarships available.

This program is being offered in the Spring of 2021 and again in the Fall of 2021. The program is broken down into two parts that must be completed in sequence. During the first semester, from January 20-May 3, 2021, students are receiving 90 hours of classroom instruction. Classes are being held remotely due to the pandemic. During the second semester from May 25-June 24, 2021 they will receive 30 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of work readiness training.

“CVS Health has helped us craft a program that is efficient and meets the needs of the industry,” says Salvador Pina, Executive Director Center for Workforce Development. “They help our students understand what is expected of them in the workplace.” In the fall, the first semester will run from September 1-December 8, 2021 and the second semester will be January 19-March 9, 2022. Upon completion of the program, students will need to pass both the state and National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTBC) Exam to be registered as Pharmacy Technicians. For more information about the program, please visit the Pharmacy Technician page.

RCC offers a suite of health science programs including radiologic technology, phlebotomy, clinical medical assistant, and medical billing and coding. All programs are designed to address the demands of these fast-growing fields, and the College regularly meets with industry leaders to update program curricula and ensure students have access to the best clinical sites in Boston.

RCC remains committed to its important mission of providing a cost-effective education and essential resources to students facing financial challenges.
