RCC Names Chancellor David Banks 2023 Commencement Speaker

Ceremony held during RCC’s Golden Anniversary Year
May 12 at 1pm

Roxbury Community College (RCC) will honor the Class of 2023 at the school’s 47th commencement ceremony on May 12. The College will host its ceremony at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center located at 1350 Tremont Street in Roxbury.

Chancellor David C. Banks has been named the 2023 Commencement Keynote Speaker. Chancellor Banks leads New York City Public Schools, the largest school system in the nation. He is the former President and CEO of the Eagle Academy Foundation, and the founding principal of The Eagle Academy for Young Men, the first school in a network of innovative all-boys public schools in New York City and Newark, N.J.

“Throughout RCC’s 50th Anniversary year, we’re respecting our heritage, cultivating leaders, and creating change,” says Interim President Jackie Jenkins-Scott. “Chancellor Banks shares our commitment to developing leadership opportunities through quality public education. He’s an aspirational leader for RCC students.”

After a year of working as a school safety officer, Chancellor Banks began his first teaching job at P.S. 167 in his childhood neighborhood on in Brooklyn, New York. From there, he went on to become a founding principal at the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice, and later at the Eagle Academy for Young Men.

“I am honored to help send off Roxbury Community College’s 2023 graduates as they embark on their bold futures and new journeys,” said Chancellor Banks. “Roxbury Community College plays a critical role in providing Black and Latino students and those from low-income backgrounds with the skills necessary to earn a decent living and support their families. Institutions like RCC are a critical part of our communities and I look forward to celebrating with everyone this May.”

Chancellor Banks will celebrate the accomplishments of RCC’s Class of 2023 with RCC faculty, staff, the College’s 2023 award winners, college supporters, and RCC alumni as part of RCC’s 50th Anniversary Homecoming Celebration. The Class of 2023 exemplifies the talent, determination, and perseverance that defines Roxbury Community College and the 50th Anniversary Celebration.
