Representatives from RCC, DoorDash, and the Massachusetts State House celebrate their new partnership supporting the Rox Box.

On Monday, September 9, 2024, Roxbury Community College (RCC) and DoorDash announced a new partnership alongside students, faculty, Massachusetts elected officials, and community leaders in support of the Rox Box, an on-campus resource that provides healthy food to students, faculty, and staff who are facing food insecurity.

“Thanks to this generous gift from DoorDash, we can all rest assured that the Rox Box is fully stocked and ready to assist RCC’s rapidly-growing student body,” said Dr. Jonathan K. Jefferson, President of Roxbury Community College.  “At RCC, we take pride in really knowing our students and providing them with the non-academic resources needed to excel in their studies and succeed in their personal lives.  We are grateful to have DoorDash as a committed partner in this mission.”

DoorDash is donating $75,000 over three years to ensure that the pantry is stocked with shelf stable and fresh foods, as well as feminine hygiene products, diapers, formula, and other personal care items. The program included a back-to-school cookout for students, a tour of the facilities.

“Stepping up to the challenge to enroll in college is a huge step for so many,” said Representative Chynah Tyler. “Unfortunately on so many campuses like Roxbury Community College, food insecurity is a major barrier to student achievement. Today, I was honored to celebrate the opening of the Rox Box here on campus and am proud that it is available for all students — we know they can excel!"

With this new funding, the Rox Box pantry will now be able to now serve roughly 700 students and staff members every month — up from the 400 it currently serves —  helping to increase its reach and significantly impact more students and faculty. Additionally, the funding will help pantry upgrade its infrastructure, acquiring new commercial grade refrigerators and freezers to give users even greater access to fresh, wholesome foods including milk, eggs, cheese, meats, and poultry.

“We are thrilled to provide Roxbury Community College with the funding needed to support its students as they are working to improve their lives and, for many, the lives of their families,” said Daniela Michanie, DoorDash Public Engagement Manager in New England. “The Rox Box is such an important resource in breaking down barriers to access food for those who may need it and give these students the help they need in a way that promotes dignity. Our work with RCC is just beginning, and we look forward to helping to ensure a future where no students in the community are going hungry.”
